According to our IG feeds, there’s a new denim kid on the block set to take over our autumn wardrobes: tulip jeans.
The fashion set went wild for barrel jeans last Autumn/Winter season, with the high-rise, balloon-like silhouette offering a playful alternative to the wide-leg jeans, flares and straight leg denim trends we’ve collectively become partial to.
If you’re a fan of the way barrel jeans sit on your body, allow me to introduce you to their more voluminous sister. The clue is in the name with tulip jeans; a fitted waist which gradually blooms outwards at the knee before curving back towards the ankle, just like the flower. While some styles on the high street offer up wraparound waistbands and split-leg detailing, there are plenty of standard iterations if ‘less is more’ is more your thing.
And, before you dismiss them as another denim trend destined to look fabulous on Instagram but ridiculous in real life, hear me out. Tulip jeans are surprisingly wearable, provided you know what to pair them with. Much like their barrel-legged predecessors, they’re all about playing with proportions. A fitted cardigan or neatly tucked shirt will balance out that generous volume through the leg, while a longer trench coat is the perfect accompaniment to wearing denim during the colder months.
The shoes deserve some consideration, too. Pointed-toe mules, cowboy boots and barely-there sandals all work particularly well with the tapered ankle, which gives your footwear a chance to be seen rather than swallowed by several inches of denim.
And if you’re wondering how to make tulip jeans work with the clothes you already own, consider the following outfits your starting point.
