Herbie, Kamasi, Thundercat Top Loaded Newport Jazz

Some of the genre’s biggest and most beloved artists will assemble July 31-Aug. 2 for the 72nd Newport Jazz Festival, which will return to Rhode Island’s Fort Adams park with a bill led by 86-year-old Herbie Hancock, Kamasi Washington and Chief Adjuah’s Miles Davis/John Coltrane centennial celebration, Thundercat, Flea, Robert Glasper and Gary Clark Jr.

Adventurous listeners will also enjoy a veritable buffet of genres and sounds from Arlo Parks, Jon Batiste, Bilal, Ari Lennox, Leon Thomas, rising U.K. star Sienna Spiro, Little Simz and deafeningly buzzy Canadian noise rock duo Angine de Poitrine, which will play the first U.S. set of its career at Newport. Nate Smith will begin a run as the event’s new artistic director, following a decade-long run by Christian McBride.

Rounding out the lineup are the Bad Plus (as part of its farewell tour), Marcus King, Chris Dave and MonoNeon’s Atomic Habitz project, Celeste, Charles Lloyd Sky Quartet, Lake Street Dive, John Scofield and Dave Holland, Snarky Puppy, Anoushka Shankar, Lala Hathaway and Charlie Hunter.

A limited number of three-day passes are on sale now for only 48 hours, with all other tickets going live on Thursday (April 23).

Newport Jazz falls the weekend after the annual Newport Folk extravaganza at the same site. This year’s confirmed performers include Ms. Lauryn Hill, Brandi Carlile, Paramore’s Hayley Williams and Cat Power.
