High Potential Season 2 Episode 2 Recap: Checkmate
(Disney/Christine Bartolucci)

Karadec is on a high-speed chase to apprehend a suspect, Derek Wright. He loses the guy and gets a phone call from Morgan and Soto.

They tell him that the GameMaker has arrived at the station, and he just waltzed in there.

They have the Game Maker (Matthew) in the interrogation room. He claims he came in because of some information.

Morgan wants to talk to him, and they have to decide if she should. They’re treading lightly.

Meanwhile, Daphne and Oz continue to search for Roman. The hotel clerk said that he had checked out, but while they were sitting there, they noticed Roman sticking his head out of a room, searching around to see if anyone was watching him.

Karadec presents Matthew/The Game Maker with the information on all the dead people, and Matthew seems to be toying with him. Morgan is frustrated that Karadec isn’t going hard enough and starts texting him questions.

(Disney/Jessica Perez)

Matthew does give a hint that he knows something when he automatically assumes Kardec’s partner, who saw him at the party the previous evening, was a “she.” But Soto reminds her that they will need more than a pronoun to convict him of a crime.

Morgan picks up on another clue when Matthew asks specifically for Pillsbury cookies, and it’s in reference to a chess move. She figures that they’ll have to let Jason go to play into the game. They talk to Jason and offer police protection since Derek is still out there trying to kill him.

Elliott wants to fill in a spot at the talent show, and Morgan is worried because she doesn’t want him to be bullied.

Matthew taunts Morgan through the glass.

They get called to a bomb threat on a bus with a two-hour detonation time and a video of Maya that may not be real.

He used a backpack there to send Morgan a message again.

Oz and Daphne attempt to speak with Roman, but he refuses to engage with them. They reach out to Morgan and text her a photo. She says that the man they’re following isn’t Roman. They have to figure out who this guy is and why he’s using Roman’s identity.

(Disney/Jessica Perez)

Soto tries to interview Matthew next. He gives them consent to search his apartment. Morgan surmises that Matthew is warning them that it is a war, thanks to a book she saw on his bookshelf. She also picks up that Maya is using Morse Code via blinking in the video of her.

It’s Jason’s address, and Morgan thinks that Matthew coerced Maya to blink that message.

But they head back to Jason’s place to talk to him, and the bomb blows up Karadec’s car. They have to bring Jason in, but he hired his own security now. It plays into what Matthew wanted.

Daphne and Oz bring up Morgan, and Roman claims he doesn’t know who that is, but it’s clear he does.

Morgan talks to Elliot about preparing for the backlash from his routine if people don’t embrace him. They talk about how different they are, and his telling her that sometimes you have to lose the battle to win the war makes her think about Matthew.

She heads to Matthew’s place, alone, to have a one-on-one with him and talk about the game of chicking that he’s playing.

(Disney/Christine Bartolucci)

She tells him that she quits. It seems to throw him off. He still won’t cop to Maya, though, but he tells her to take the stairs instead of the elevator.

She does, and she hears music playing, which makes her think that she has found Maya.

Meanwhile, Derek is at the hotel where Jason is staying, and he’s preparing to kill him. Karadec has to race there in time to stop that shooting, while still being worried about Morgan, whom he has spoken to by now after she tells him she’s at Matthew’s place.

Karadec finds Derk just as he’s about to kill Jason. He tries to talk him down. At the same time, they get into the apartment, and Morgan saves Maya. They have to get Maya to talk down Derek, and it works.

They can’t arrest Matthew for Maya’s abduction because nothing else ties to him. Morgan surmises that they’ll never get Matthew in custody because he’ll likely kill himself.

Apparently, Matthew didn’t harm Maya in any way, so the blood they found was from something else. Morgan goes to Matthew’s place to talk to him. She says that she read up about his mother, who was accused of stealing something from a hotel in Bel Air, and she confessed during interrogation.

(Disney/Jessica Perez)

She figures out that Matthew stole the blood from the hospital where he volunteers. Maya donated blood.

Matthew discusses how the rich are all the same, and they rig the game so that they always win, while they’re all pawns. It’s why he didn’t care about setting up Jason.

Matthew prepares to jump off his balcony because he doesn’t want to go to prison. He falls, but he drops onto a cushion that the police set up. Oz gets to arrest him.

Morgan and her family show up at the talent show to support Elliot. He DJs and performs as a rapper.

While Ava takes a moment to talk to his bullies, the man posing as Roaman shows up to talk to Morgan. He says his name is Arthur, and that he’s friends with Roman. Roman sent him to lay eyes on Morgan and Ava, but he doesn’t like that Morgan is working with the cops because he doesn’t trust law enforcement. He’s on the run from them.

Arthur gives her a card and says that when she wants to talk about why she’s with the cops, she should reach out. And Morgan asks him about a bag he was carrying in the photo that she knows belongs to Roman, and what was in it.
