For a while there, Amy seemed like the only Duggar with a brain in her head.
When Josh Duggar was convicted on child pornography charges, it was Amy who openly celebrated and mourned for the victims.
When other Duggars, like Jim Bob and Michelle, made excuses for their son, it was Amy who called out their hypocrisy.
But at the end of the day, Amy is still a Duggar.
That means she still holds many of the same ultra-conservative, evangelical beliefs with which she was raised.
So it shouldn’t have come as much of a surprise when Amy celebrated the reversal of Roe v. Wade last week.
“ABORTION IS OVERTURNED!!! THANK YOU JESUS!!” Amy tweeted.
The backlash was immediate as Amy received more comments than likes (what Twitter users call a “ratio”).
“Full offense, f–k Amy,” one person replied.
“Access to SAFE abortions is overturned. This is not a good thing!” another added.
A third pointed out the hypocrisy in Amy’s statement, writing:
“Would you feel this way if your cousin had gotten one of his sisters pregnant?”
From there, Amy attempted to run damage control, wrongly asserting that no lives will be endangered by the court’s decision.
“Also I’m sure there will be guidelines in emergency / deathly complications procedure situations,” she tweeted.
“But think of how many babies our country has killed. You cannot tell me we haven’t killed the child that could have cured cancer or that could have had a chance to change the world.”
Needless to say, these comments didn’t win anyone over to Amy’s side.
“Her follow up tweet…is so, so laughable,” one user pointed out, according to UK tabloid The Sun.
“It’s the follow up tweet that shows she has zero understanding,” another noted.
“Wow so now you scam people and are celebrating the death of women in the United States. It’s time for you to be canceled!” a third chimed in.
Many former fans called for a boycott of Amy’s Thirty1Thirty clothing boutique.
Following that backlash, Amy suddenly took a much more nuanced view on the issue.
“I’m just like a lot of you. Of course I don’t want innocent babies dying. But I’m curious to see what each state will decide to do,” she tweeted, backtracking on many of her previous comments.
“I have questions too reguarding [sic] the health issues or if a woman is assaulted. I get the anger, I get why people are in an uproar.
“I bet Roe vs Wade will cause riots, panic and more chaos,” Amy added.
“There has got to be a middle ground for this sensitive subject. Or something right?”
“Can Twitter be a platform where we can discuss and not attack each other? My gosh every time I get on here I’m appalled how people treat each other,” she added in a later tweet.
Obviously, Amy didn’t seem interested in nuance and level-headed discussion until after she received major blowback and threats of boycotts.
But hey, we’re sure Jim Bob and company agree with her views on this issue.
Maybe she should consider that as she contemplates this issue further.
