Sister Wives: Why Fans Think Kody Brown’s Grown More Extreme Over Time

Kody Brown has never been the most popular polygamist in Sister Wives, but fans have noted that throughout the past few seasons, Kody has become more domineering than ever before. Kody was never the most fun-loving reality star, but in Sister Wives season 16, the patriarch appears to be at his most aggressive as he struggles to reclaim control of his unruly family. From attempts to scare his wives away to hormone supplements, here are all of the reasons why Sister Wives fans think Kody Brown’s grown more extreme over time.

In the past, Kody has rubbed the Sister Wives fanbase the wrong way by neglecting his first three wives, Meri, Janelle, and Christine. Viewers believe that once he inducted Robyn into his plural marriage in 2010, Kody became ambivalent about the wives he had spent decades with. Over the course of the past few Sister Wives seasons, however, Kody’s indifference toward Meri, Janelle, and Christine evolved into aggression. In season 16, Kody is the most controlling he’s ever been with his spouses as his impossibly cautious COVID-19 protocol demonstrates. The patriarch’s unyielding hold over his wives has become unbearable for Christine and Janelle in Sister Wives season 16, which is why fans think Kody’s grown more extreme over time.

In the current Sister Wives season, Kody Brown has become set on having complete control over his wives and children in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. A harsh example of Kody’s absolutism was his insistence that Janelle and Christine choose between spending the holidays with him or with their children. Fans noted that Kody got satisfaction out of his wives having to prove their dedication to him. Janelle asserted that Kody’s become more extreme over the years, prompting a Reddit user to wonder, “What do you think is behind his growing extremism/absolutism?” One surprisingly common theory among the Sister Wives fanbase is Kody’s use of testosterone supplements. One commenter explained, “Over-the-counter testosterone supplements… makes the users much more aggressive. It’s marketed very heavily to men in [Kody’s] age group.” Fans think Kody’s grown more extreme over time as a side effect of his hormones.

While testosterone supplements could account for Kody’s increased aggression in Sister Wives season 16, some fans think the ever-shifting Brown family dynamic is responsible for Kody’s developing extremism. When Sister Wives season 1 premiered, Kody had a house full of obedient wives and children, but over the years, a handful of the reality star’s spouses and children have spoken out against Kody. In season 16, both Christine and Janelle have allowed themselves to question and criticize Kody, which has likely contributed to his harsh behavior. A fan assessed, “[Kody] needs… to maintain his Alpha status.” An alternate hypothesis is that Kody’s hoping his increasingly unbearable attitude will be too much for his first trio of wives to handle. One viewer speculated, “[Kody’s] just trying to run all the wives off… His solution is to make them so miserable they can’t stand to stay.”

Kody’s always been critiqued for his husbandly capabilities, but Sister Wives fans are convinced that season 16 is as explosive as it is because Kody Brown’s grown more extreme over time. Whether it’s the result of a control crisis or testosterone supplements, Kody’s out-of-control aggression has taken a toll on the Brown family. Unfortunately for the polygamist, Kody’s desperate attempts to maintain authority haven’t worked out for him just yet in Sister Wives.
