‘Expensive blonde’ is tipped to be the biggest hair colour trend this spring

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably already heard about “Expensive Brunette” – the multi-dimensional luxe hair colour that took off in winter 2021 and is set to be a front-runner for 2022 hair colour trends, too. But, what about if blondes want to have fun? Umm… well there’s a shade coming up the tracks that’s tipped to be big news for spring. Its name? “Expensive blonde”. Go figure.

“You’ve all heard of the expensive brunette trend, now this is what I’m calling expensive blonde,” celebrity hairstylist Tom Smith, European creative director for Evo Hair told fans on his Instagram grid. In a clip discussing his hair trend predictions for 2022 the pro singled out the hair colour as the one to watch if you fancied switching – or updating – your hair blonde.

“It’s a really soft contrast so there are fewer shadows in the hair, but it’s not one set colour. There’s still dimension, there’s still highs and lows,” Tom explained. “Generally, it’s a warmer shade but I think this is really going to do well in Spring,” he added.

In the video Tom showed a picture of Selling Sunset’s Chrishell Stause who shifted her hair colour from a caramel to a brighter warm blonde last summer.

The technique closely follows that of expensive brunette which Tom previously said “is all about giving deeper hair energy, dimension, and detail.” To get that luxe finish, an expert blend of different blonde tones will take lighter hair to the next level vs an all-over box dye look. “I’m of the opinion that it’s a professional hair colourists’ responsibility to give clients something they could never get at home,” Tom explained. And expertly placed highlights and lowlight can help add interest and give your blonde a look that’s more intentional and designed.

If you’re interested in giving the trend a go, make sure you and your hair colourist are on the same wavelength to ensure the colour is bespoke to your vision and lifestyle. Discuss the deepest and lightest shades of blonde you’d like to incorporate such as golden, sand, butterscotch, platinum, beige or honey. You hair stylist should scatter them subtly so the finished look is effortless but – you guessed it, expensive.
