This abstract eye makeup trend is having a moment, and we are *so* here for it

We love an abstract eye makeup trend. As an exciting and fluid way of expressing ourselves through beauty, we’re totally here for it.

Because let’s face it, we don’t know what the upcoming new year will bring. But we do want to make our eye makeup pop in 2022. So grab that eyeshadow palette you were gifted over the festive season, arm yourself with makeup brushes, and give it a whirl.

Need a helping hand? We got you. GLAMOUR hit up a makeup expert (from TikTok, no less) to tell us *everything* we need to know.

An expert guide to abstract eye makeup

According to makeup artist and Tiktok creator William Grande, there are no rules when it comes to abstract makeup.

“Make sure you have the right tools, i.e. detailed/angled brushes,” he says. “I like to use the Morphe M250-1 for detailed work.”

In terms of ensuring both eyes match, William recommends treating your eyes like the canvas you’ve been dying to paint. Use water-activated liners to create opaque, bold looks to do this best.

“Water-activated liners work best for symmetry and creating abstract shapes,” he says, recommending the Suva Beauty liners in particular.

In terms of getting inspiration for the shapes and abstractions you want to create for your eyes, William advises thinking big. “Base your look on something that inspires you – for example, an abstract piece of artwork, or perhaps work from a theme.”

There are other things to consider also – while there’s a lot of room for experimentation as you go, William advises choosing colours based on what will work best with your skin and your general vibe. So do some prep before you get started.

“I would choose the colours I want to use beforehand and make sure they work together and stand out against my completion,” he says.
