This TikTok hairbrush hack is going viral – here’s why you need to wash yours ASAP

It’s been a year of weird and wonderful online trends – from frozen Beauty Blenders to celebrity doppelgängers and the return of concealer lips – but this TikTok hairbrush hack might just be one of the more practical suggestions to come out of the social media world.

One TikTok creator, @everything_tidy, has gone viral after she created a video washing her hairbrushes to see how much dirt was really on them – and it’s safe to say the results sparked a reaction.

She says in the clip: “I watched a video last week and it was a lady and she said, “Maybe the main reason why your hair is getting greasy or oily quickly isn’t in fact because of your hair follicles and it is in fact because of your brush,”

“So I’m gonna put that to the test. I’ve put all my brushes in the sink and we’re gonna leave them for a bit. I’ve used hot water and shampoo because she didn’t state what she used – I figured because it’s hair.”

After putting her hairbrushes into the water to soak, she returns to the sink to inspect the water – finding that it had gone a murky grey colour. Nice.

“So I’ve left them for an hour and come back to check the water… oh my god, that’s disgusting! Ladies, don’t forget to wash your hairbrushes. I didn’t even know that was a thing, but look at the state of that,” she said.

The TikToker credited Essex hair salon Unit4Four for the cleaning tip, which firmly divided her followers.

Many were horrified at the thought that anyone wouldn’t know to wash their hairbrushes, while others were ready to head to their own bathroom sinks pronto.

“This confuses me that people didn’t know this. It’s the same as washing your makeup brushes,” one wrote, while another reacted: “Noooooooo way!! I need to do this tomorrow.”

It’s obvious, but genius all the same. Will you be trying this TikTok hairbrush hack?
