Young Sheldon Season 5 Trailer Teases George’s Infidelity

A new Young Sheldon season 5 promo teases George’s infidelity and, thus, the fulfillment of Sheldon’s recounting of his father’s affair in The Big Bang Theory. Young Sheldon is an American sitcom and a spin-off of The Big Bang Theory that follows fan-favorite Sheldon Cooper throughout his childhood. Set in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Young Sheldon follows Sheldon’s struggle to fit in with his peers and his family in Texas while being a child genius and attending high school at age 9.

The fact that Sheldon’s father, George, will have an affair, has been largely known due to Sheldon’s retelling of it in The Big Bang Theory. The sad tale came to light in season 10, when Sheldon recalled coming home from school early at age 13 and walking in on his father with another woman. Meanwhile, Young Sheldon season 4 concluded with Sheldon at age 11. Since the spin-off has tried to hold true to Sheldon’s stories and timeline from The Big Bang Theory, viewers know that the infidelity is likely to figure into Young Sheldon soon. In fact, Young Sheldon’s season 4 finale briefly hinted at the affair, ending on a cliffhanger with George being joined at the bar by the newly single Brenda Sparks.

As reported by TVLine, the Young Sheldon season 5 promo teases at what really happens between George and Brenda. The very brief trailer seems to start right where season 4 left off, with Brenda and George at the bar. Brenda suggests they “go someplace else,” and George expresses interest at the idea. However, the interaction is cut short by George’s heart issues and he lands in the hospital once more. The season promises to get very interesting when both George’s wife, Mary, and Brenda show up at the hospital. The promo does not entirely confirm that something happens between George and Brenda, but it does hint at it. The two express mutual interest in one another and, as season 4 illustrated, they both meet at the bar at a vulnerable time. At the end of season 4, George is dissatisfied at how his life turned out and Brenda is newly separated from her husband. Meanwhile, Young Sheldon season 5’s recent casting news revealed that Billy Sparks (Wyatt McClure) will become a series regular. The fact that Billy will appear more frequently also hints that his mother, Brenda, may figure more heavily into season 5 as well. Increased frequency in interaction between the Sparks and Coopers and a clear interest between George and Brenda effectively lays the foundation for an affair.

Overall, it remains to be seen if Brenda is the woman in Sheldon’s story of his father’s affair. While season 4 and season 5 seem to be creating the opportunity for an affair, it could still be simply building up to George’s actual fall from grace. Even if his interactions with Brenda don’t blossom into an affair, the fact that there was interest and musings could make him more susceptible to going further in the future. Regardless if Brenda is the mistress or not, Young Sheldon‘s season 4 cliffhanger and season 5 promo show the beginning of the breakdown in George’s marriage. It will be significant if season 5 does cover George’s affair, because that potentially sets season 6 up to cover the next major event in Sheldon’s childhood – George’s passing.
