Arrowverse actor David Ramsey has addressed theories that his character, John Diggle, could become the franchise’s Green Lantern. Diggle was introduced in the very first season of Arrow, and has remained a core player in the franchise as one of its oldest heroes. After some time away from the series after Arrow’s conclusion, Ramsey is preparing for a multi-episode Arrowverse return with guest-starring turns in Batwoman, Supergirl, The Flash, Superman & Lois, and Legends of Tomorrow.
For years, viewers have theorized that Diggle could become the Arrowverse’s version of the iconic DC superhero Green Lantern. Those theories were magnified exponentially when, at the end of the Arrow series finale, Diggle encountered a mysterious green box that fell from the sky before him. Upon opening the box, Diggle was illuminated by a green glow, leading many to believe it contained one of the famed Green Lantern rings.

Ramsey has now commented on the theories surrounding his character as he prepares to return to the Arrowverse this year. In an interview with TVLine, the actor addressed the Green Lantern rumors, saying that Diggle is hesitant to take to the stars as a proper superhero. “To your other point, which is exploring what has happened to Diggle since encountering that green box, that will be explored in the other episodes,” Ramsey said, “on Batwoman, Flash, Superman & Lois, and Supergirl. Whatever was in the box, he refused the invitation of. Let’s put it like that. But there are consequences to that.” Ramsey went on to describe why Diggle wouldn’t necessarily want the responsibility of more supernatural power.
We’ve gone to great lengths over the years to make Diggle one of the more grounded characters. Any time he would go fast with Flash, he would throw up, and he was always amazed when he saw someone flying. All these things were kind of otherworldly to him, because he was a very earthbound hero. And after Crisis, he got back his wife, who was abducted by the Monitor, and he got back his daughter Sara, who was taken out of existence by Flashpoint. So part of Diggle’s story is that the last thing he would want to do right now is receive an invitation from something otherworldly, because he finally has his family back, and he lost his best friend to some otherworldliness. So he refused the invitation of whatever was in the box, but there are consequences to that, and that story, what he will do next, is part of what we tell throughout these four episodes.
While it seems that Diggle has avoided the call of the mysterious box so far, Ramsey’s commentary suggests there could still be hope for a Green Lantern transformation. A hero being hesitant to step into the spotlight doesn’t necessarily mean they can’t be convinced to join the fight, which might still happen with Diggle. It’s also worth noting that the character is coming off several years fighting alongside Oliver Queen and his team, so it’s understandable he may be looking for a quieter existence now. Either way, it’s possible that at least some cameos from other Green Lanterns or references to them could be coming to the Arrowverse soon.
The bigger barrier to Diggle becoming Green Lantern is that Warner Bros. is already developing a new, separate Green Lantern series for HBO Max. While versions of the character can certainly exist in multiple places at once, it seems a bit unlikely that the studio would oversaturate itself with Green Lanterns while excitement for the new series is building. However, there’s still a chance John Diggle could become the Green Lantern somewhere down the line in the Arrowverse.
