Tenet Tickets Go On Sale This Friday For Early Screenings

Tickets for early showings of Christopher Nolan’s Tenet will go on sale this Friday. Nolan has become one of Hollywood’s biggest directors over the last several years, and the mystery surrounding Tenet only heightened the general interest in his latest project. The movie stars John David Washington and Robert Pattinson, and the plot is still largely a secret, even though time inversion is confirmed to be a factor.

Originally, fans anxious to see another Nolan blockbuster would’ve already seen Tenet by now, but coronavirus has changed the release plans for the film several times. Warner Bros. and Nolan had a July 17 release date set and eventually were forced to delay the film indefinitely. It has since been announced that Tenet will finally release internationally on August 26 and then in open domestic markets on September 3. However, some will have the opportunity to see the movie earlier in the states and tickets are finally going on sale.

Warner Bros. plans to roll out Tenet for sneak peek showings domestically for three days starting August 31. According to IndieWire, tickets for these special screenings will go on sale this Friday, August 21. For those planning to see Tenet once it is more readily available, tickets for the film’s opening weekend will go on sale Thursday, August 27. This report also notes some details on the deals theaters have to agree to with WB if they are going to show Tenet. The studio will collect 63% of ticket sales and theaters with more than nine screens must show Tenet for 12 weeks.

The reveal of when tickets are going on sale for Tenet domestically is one of the final steps towards ensuring the movie comes out on the current release date. With major theater chains around the country starting to open up in the coming days, it would be quite surprising if Tenet wasn’t able to move forward with its current release strategy. Tickets are already on sale internationally, and the early results for Tenet‘s UK showings are promising.

Once Tenet is finally released, it will be fascinating to see how the film performs financially. The blockbuster was expected to be one of 2020’s biggest hits, especially when it came to non-IP films. But, it is not known what a post-coronavirus box office will look like for major new releases. Instead of Tenet being a near guarantee to turn a profit for WB, there is a decent chance that the studio could lose money on a Nolan blockbuster. Due to the filmmaker’s insistence to have Tenet be a marquee title to try and keep theaters alive in this tough time, WB didn’t elect to push the film further into 2020 – or go to 2021 altogether when the theater industry could be closer to pre-pandemic levels. But, once tickets do go on sale for Tenet, it won’t be long before projections for its opening weekend become available.
