Xbox boss Phil Spencer has claimed that the next generation of consoles will feel as dramatic a change as the jump from 2D to 3D. The PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X are due to be released at the end of 2020, but neither Sony or Microsoft have held a proper reveal event for either system that shows what they are capable in regards to their games.
The specifications of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X have been revealed and a lot has been said about what each system is capable of. There have been comparisons between the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in terms of hardware, but so far, these incredible benefits have only been described in technical language.

We haven’t seen any physical evidence of the power of the next generation of consoles, but the head Xbox is confident that they will see one of the biggest quality upgrades in gaming history. Phil Spencer (the executive vice-president of Gaming at Microsoft and the head of the Xbox) has said on Twitter that the feel of the games during the upcoming console generation will be as dramatic a change as the jump from 2D to 3D, due to the new technology in play.

There has yet to be any indication that either the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X will be exciting fans in the same way that they felt when jumping to the original PlayStation or Nintendo 64 from the Sega Mega Drive and Super Nintendo. The Xbox Series X games might load 4x faster than equivalent software on the Xbox One, but that’s not much of a jump. A lot has been said about the benefits of ray tracing, but more impressive lighting in a 3D space is hardly equivalent to a jump from 2D to 3D games.
Spencer recently said that Xbox Series X games will be revealed soon, which suggests that Microsoft has its ducks in a row and is gearing up to start promoting the system. Microsoft will need to start showing off the Xbox Series X soon, especially if it wants to allay fears that the system will be delayed until next year. It won’t be long now until the next generation of consoles is put to the test, and fans will be able to decide from themselves whether they will be a worthwhile addition beneath the Christmas tree, or whether a few hardware upgrades aren’t worth a day one purchase.
The Xbox Series X is due to be released in late 2020.
