Felicity Huffman’s Daughter Lands on Her Feet

Hey, how about some good news? A story of second chances, of rising above challenges and trying again, of putting oneself out there again, of proving one’s mother wrong in, like, a nice way? Sophia Macy, oldest daughter of Desperate Housewives’s Felicity Huffman and Shameless’s William H. Macy, will go to Carnegie Mellon University’s drama school.

Huffman was indicted and served a little time for her role in the college admissions scandal, a role she took up on behalf of Sophia without her daughter’s knowledge. She paid the scheme’s ringleader William “Rick” Singer $15,000 to have him doctor her eldest kid’s SAT scores after she took them. “My daughter knew absolutely nothing about my actions, and in my misguided and profoundly wrong way, I have betrayed her,” Huffman said in a statement to the court prior to entering her guilty plea. “This transgression toward her and the public I will carry for the rest of my life. My desire to help my daughter is no excuse to break the law or engage in dishonesty.” (The actress did not continue her efforts for her younger daughter, Georgia, who is set to go to Vassar in the fall.)

In another statement offered before her sentencing, Huffman said, “When my daughter looked at me and asked with tears streaming down her face, ‘Why didn’t you believe in me? Why didn’t you think I could do it on my own?’ I had no adequate answer for her. I could only say, ‘I am sorry.’ ”

It has been bumpy road for Sophia. There have been ups—she booked her first major acting role in season two of The Twilight Zone hosted by Jordan Peele—and there have been downs—she lost her spot at a different college, one that did not even need SAT scores, according to her father’s letter to the court. Now, she has retaken her tests, according to Page Six, and gained admittance on her own. Enjoy Pittsburgh, Sophia.
