Harvey Weinstein Was Rushed to the Hospital on His Way to Jail

On Monday, Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of rape in the third degree and committing a criminal sexual act in the first degree—but he didn’t spend his first night post-conviction in jail. Instead, while on his way to Rikers Island, the disgraced producer was rerouted to Bellevue Hospital in New York, and admitted to its prison ward.

Weinstein had complained of chest pains and heart palpitations, according to CNN. A source told Deadline that the convicted rapist also “suffers from high blood pressure, and that could be playing a role as well as his other aliments.” (Weinstein drew criticism throughout his trial for his conspicuous use of a walker, with critics accusing him of making a transparent bid for sympathy. Weinstein’s legal team insisted that the walker was not a prop, saying that their client needed it after enduring a “serious car accident” and subsequent back surgery.)

Weinstein’s attorney, Donna Rotunno, told CNN that the ex-movie mogul is currently doing “okay,” and the hospital indicates that he remained in the ward as of Tuesday morning. It is unclear as of yet how long he will stay at Bellevue. Prior to the rerouting, Judge James Burke had ordered Weinstein to be held in Rikers until his sentencing March 11—despite Rotunno’s efforts to convince him to keep Weinstein out of jail.

He faces up to 25 years in prison for the criminal sex act conviction, stemming from a 2006 incident described by former production assistant Miriam Haley, and up to four years for the third-degree rape of hairdresser and aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013. Weinstein has also been hit with multiple charges of sexual assault in Los Angeles; if found guilty there, Weinstein could be sentenced to up to 28 years in California state prison.
