System of a Down will play its only North American show of 2027 on June 5 at the 65,000-capacity Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Ca., with support from California rock veterans Pierce the Veil. It will be the biggest headlining show in the state of System’s career, following a two-night 2022 visit to the 24,000-capacity BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.
The Serj Tankian-led band sold out massive stadiums in Europe this summer while celebrating the 25th birthday of its beloved album Toxicity. System hosted an exhibition dubbed Beyond the Streets last week in Los Angeles, featuring artifacts and other memorabilia from the era.
“The friendships in the band are really strong right now,”guitarist Daron Malakian recently told SPIN. “We get together, we have dinner. [Bassist] Shavo [Odajian] and I went to a hockey game together last week. Serj and I are in touch on the telephone every other week. That hasn’t happened in 20 years. We go to dinner together with the wives. Forget about the band. The friendship is back, and the friendship being back is making us enjoy the band.”
The Rose Bowl gig will follow five previously announced stadium shows in South America, Australia and New Zealand in conjunction with Brazilian promoter 30e, which also recently inked a similar deal with Faith No More. In a nice moment of synergy, the latter act will open each of those gigs.
Tankian was recently onstage with Tom Morello at the Power to the People festival outside Washington, D.C., where he handled lead vocals on a performance of Audioslave’s “Like a Stone.”
