And while granny jeans might have earned their place in our wardrobes over summer, I’d argue they’re even better suited to the colder months. The slightly relaxed silhouette leaves plenty of room for layering, whether that’s a tucked-in roll-neck beneath an embroidered cardigan, a chunky cable-knit jumper or a beautiful wool coat. It’s the sort of outfit formula that makes getting dressed on a freezing November morning feel considerably less miserable.
Another big plus: granny jeans – like all jeans, you might argue – go well with absolutely everything. Yes, you can absolutely wear granny jeans and a nice top on a night out. Pair them with kitten heels, and you’ll be the belle of the cocktail bar. But for everyday? The fashion pack’s shoe of choice is the heeled ballerina.
It makes sense. The shoe is a classic style with a faintly retro feel, as synonymous with Kaia Gerber (her faves are Repetto‘s Camille shoe) as they are with classic style icons such as Jane Birkin (another big Repetto fan). In other words: they match the granny jeans’ energy. Both pieces are polished and toe the ever-blurry line between smart and casual.
For autumn/winter, I’d look for heeled ballerinas in chocolate-brown suede, glossy burgundy leather or classic black, and wear them with ankle-grazing denim that allows the shoes to have their moment. Add a pair of knitted socks when temperatures dip, an oversized scarf and your favourite vintage-inspired cardigan, and you’ve got an outfit that’s equal parts off-duty fashion editor and extremely well-dressed grandmother.
