Princess Diana’s uniform of ’80s shoes and baggy jeans is an essential autumn look

Diana was never really the type to wax lyrical about fashion, usually saving her soundbite opportunities to speak about issues closer to her heart. But if the “Revenge Dress” moment tells us anything, it’s that she was always intentional about what she wore.

The princess seemed to instinctively understand the power of fashion as a tool for creative expression, using clothes to communicate her inner world to a public that poured over every image. Sometimes, that meant wearing a knock-out LBD as an act of strength and defiance. But more often, it looked surprisingly normal: baggy jeans and casual ‘80s shoes, an everyday, down-to-earth uniform that showed she wasn’t so different to the rest of us – you know, apart from all the “royal highness” stuff.

As we head into autumn, those are the Lady Di references we’ll be tapping into for our cosy, comfy fits. Her daily looks feel just as fresh today as they did four decades ago – and the best part is that they’re incredibly easy to replicate. Who needs a £220,000 frock when you can look this good in jeans every day?

Baggy jeans and a graphic tee is a timeless combo that pairs well with literally any shoe: trainers, boots, heels – you name it. But this season, heeled ballerinas reign supreme. For the Lady Di look, you’ll want to find a two-tone pair with a contrasting toe, then finish the look off with a sharp belt. Keep everything else simple, classic and clean. Think: your favourite gold hoops and dainty leather-strap watch.
