Nail trends (and shapes) may come and go, but there are a handful of styles that are forever classics. Case in point: short nail designs. In fact, the perennial shape is seeing a resurgence in popularity, according to top celebrity nail artist, Michelle Humphrey, whose A list clients include Sabrina Carpenter, Dua Lipa and Simone Ashley. “Clients’ are opting for natural nail lengths and shapes and long nails seem to be on the backburner,” Michelle explains to Glamour.
It’s not just celebs who are making a shift, salons are seeing the same trend. “Our customers are currently leaning more towards natural beauty trends,” confirms Juanita Huber-Millet, founder of global nail salon Townhouse. “Paired with bold colours or nail art, this length can look incredible.”
Why are short nails trending?
Short nails have always been popular and stylish, but as with all trends, the headlining shapes come in waves. While longer shapes, like almond have been favoured for the first half of the decade, thanks to its ability to elongate fingers and offer up extra canvas for creativity, we’re seeing a movement back towards simplicity. Nothing feels as effortless and understated as short nails, especially when paired with an immaculate glossy polish. That’s why they work whether you’re a cool girl (dark chocolate is very in right now) or a classic babes (we’ll never not love a glazed nude). “Dark reds and blacks look very chic on short nails, but natural pinks and nudes also look beautiful,” Juanita explains. “We love delicate, negative space nail art and colour pops for designs on short nails, too,” she adds.
