Venezuela is making headlines worldwide after devastating earthquakes on Wednesday (June 24).
What Happened in Venezuela?
The main 7.5 magnitude quake is being described as the largest the country has seen in more than a century, since 1900’s magnitude 7.7 earthquake, based on data from the US Geological Survey, per CNN.
There was also a a 7.2 magnitude foreshock less than one minute before.
How Many People Have Died in the Venezuela Earthquakes?
At least 164 people have died and over 971 people are injured as a result, according to acting President Delcy Rodriguez.
Rescuers are searching through the rubble in Caracas, and people have been heard calling for help, according to BBC reports.
A state of emergency has been declared and airport, rail and transport services have been halted, per BBC.
President Donald Trump Says the U.S. Is Ready to Help
“The two major earthquakes that just hit the great people of Venezuela are both massive in scale and have left a devastating number of deaths,” President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“The U.S.A. stands ready, willing, and able to help! I have instructed all agencies of our government to get ready to move quickly. We will be there for our new and great friends. Early reports are not good!!!”
