Exclusive: Grace Gummer Was an Earth Goddess Mother Warrior At the 2026 Met Gala

“Okay. She said, ‘You’re going to look like a badass elegant vision. I’m getting really excited,’” reads Gummer. “I said, ‘I’m beyond excited. Warrior. Helen of Troy vibes.’ And she said, “Ancient and futuristic vision. You are the empress. I will be your lady in waiting…the mother goddess loves us and she is chic as fuck.”

Gummer walked the carpet with Hearst, who wore a black gown from her own collection. But while “Golden goddess of past, present, and future” was on the mood board, there were also other elements at play. “The edges are raw,” Gummer notes. “It’s both raw and sophisticated. Together, like nature.”

The gown, Gummer says, is a bit of a departure from what she typically wears. “The thing that does feel like me and something that I would go for fashion-wise is that it does show my body,” she says. “It’s very body-conscious and it’s putting everything on display, but not in a grotesque, gratuitous way.” Given that the gala’s theme was about “embodied dressing” and fashion’s relationship to the body, Gummer hit the nail on the head.

There’s another element of the dress that is special to Gummer. “I feel like a sculpture,” she says. “My dad is a sculptor, and it was important to me also to honor that idea.”

While she loved honoring her father, Don Gummer, it’s motherhood that has been on the mind for Gummer. She recently had her second child with husband Mark Ronson, and she also earned raves this spring for playing one of America’s foremost mothers (and sisters), Caroline Kennedy.

Love Story was a sensation in large part because of its fashion. Although Caroline Kennedy wasn’t necessarily as well known for her style as her sister-in-law Carolyn Bessette, Gummer was still aesthetically inspired by her character. “She’s much more of an elevated, classier style than me, but I strive to be more like the Caroline Kennedy in Love Story sartorially,” Gummer says. “I feel like she’s just the epitome of grace and class and clean lines, and mixing the end of the ’80s with the beginning of the ’90s.”
