This is not the first time Middleton has ended a video with the phrase “you are not alone.” She used the same phrase to close out the video where she announced to the world that she had completed her chemotherapy course in September of 2024. Shot by Will Warr, the video showed the princess together with Prince William and their three children, George, Charlotte, and Louis, in the fields and woods of Norfolk, celebrating everyday life and small moments of happiness. Kate wanted to emphasize the unpredictability of life and the strength that comes from confronting illness: “Everything can change in an instant…cancer forces you to confront your vulnerabilities in ways you had never considered before,” she said at the time. The images of the butterfly resting on her fingers became a metaphor for her fragility and strength at the same time.
The end of the clip referred back to a message of hope that the princess addressed to those who, like her, were going through the hard experience of cancer: “To all those who are continuing their journey against cancer, I remain with you, side by side, hand in hand. From darkness can come light, so let that light shine.”
Kate’s cancer journey began in January 2024 with surgery on her abdomen at the London Clinic, for a problem initially described as non-cancerous. However, subsequent tests confirmed the presence of a tumor, and the princess then followed a course of preventive chemotherapy. In March 2024, Kate made public the diagnosis of her disease in a moving video, explaining how the discovery had come as a shock to her and the Prince of Wales and emphasizing the great difficulty in having to communicate the news to her three young children.
After a year of treatment, the princess announced remission in January 2025. The announcement came soon after Kate’s first solo appearance since her illness, at the Royal Marsden to thank doctors and nurses for the “exceptional care, support and empathy” they had shown her. “The princess wanted to make that visit to raise awareness of the world-class care and treatment offered at the Marsden,” a Kensington Palace spokesman stated.
At the Royal Marsden, Catherine spoke with volunteers and patients, listening to personal experiences of their treatment journey and demonstrating great emotional closeness. Chatting with a patient, Katherine Field, who was undergoing chemotherapy and wearing a cold cap (a cooling cap that, by reducing blood flow and thus the amount of chemotherapy drug to the scalp, helps prevent hair loss), the princess asked her, “When did you start treatment? Oh, today? How are you doing?” “It’s really hard,” Kate responded. “It’s a shock. Everyone told me that keeping a positive attitude really makes a difference. They recommended that I wear warm clothes because of the side effects of treatment,” she recounted movingly.
