Torchlight 3 Leaves Early Access Next Month, Hits Switch Later This Year

The action role-playing game Torchlight III is set to leave early access and launch on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in October. The game, which was previously known as Torchlight Frontiers, began life as an MMO before development shifted to a more linear experience during production. Dropping the more expansive multiplayer features means that the sequel is more of a successor to Torchlight II and the original title

Often considered to be a more lighthearted take on the Diablo style of game, Torchlight has changed a lot since it was first introduced in 2009. The latest entyr in the franchise takes place more than 100 years after the events of its predecessors and features new skills, classes, and pets for the player to use. While original developers Runic Games no longer exists, series co-creator Max Schaefer continues to play a leading role in the development of the sequel.

Developer Echtra Games has announced that Torchlight III will leave early access next month and officially launch on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The studio revealed that the game would be available from October 13, with a Nintendo Switch version following in the near future. In a lengthy post about the upcoming release on the game’s official website, the developer also confirmed that each version of Torchlight III would have an exclusive fairy pet, although it appears that these pets will simply be different colors of the Glittersprite creature. There’s also no word on whether the title will come to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S either.

Torchlight III has only been in early access for a small amount of time, especially when compared to some titles that remain in the testing phase for several years. In fact, the game only entered early access around four months ago. During that time, the sequel has been updated several times. The most recent saw the developers introduce a number of changes as a result of feedback from fans. This includes the addition of a testing dummy for players to try out new weapons and abilities, a clearer relic subclass system to make leveling up a simpler process, and increasing the availablity of skill points. The Dusk Mage class has also been tweaked to make it more efffective when used by skilled players.

Gamers have been waiting for a new Torchlight game for some time now, so the news that Torchlight III is almost ready to launch will be good news to fans of the series. While the limited time the game has spent in early access might suggest that the studio has not taken into account player feedback effectively, the sheer amount of updates made to Torchlight III over the last few months should reassure players that the developer has listened. Hopefully, the new sequel will live up to the lofty expectations set by its two predecessors.
