Exclusive Interview: Adam Treasure (Asylum: Dead Shadows)

What made you want to get involved in the film industry?

I’ve always been absolutely passionate about storytelling and the magic of visual media—it has this incredible ability to stir emotions, spark thoughts, and just inspire. Being part of the film industry lets me dive right into that world, sharing stories and connecting with people on a really deep level. And you know what? I just love the whole vibe of film, the way it makes me feel—it’s something special!

Where did the idea for Asylum: Dead Shadows come from?

“The idea for ‘Asylum: Deadly Shadows’ originated from a fascination with the supernatural and a desire to explore the darker aspects of human nature. We were intrigued by the idea of setting the story in an abandoned asylum, a place steeped in history and mystery. Drawing inspiration from urban legends and real-life tales of haunted locations, we crafted a narrative that delves into the depths of fear, trust, and the unknown. Ultimately, the concept evolved into a gripping exploration of ancient malevolence and the blurred lines between reality and the supernatural.”

How do you get Asylum: Deadly Shadows to stand out in the crowd in such a vast crowd of independent horror?

“We believe that ‘Asylum: Deadly Shadows’ stands out in the crowded landscape of independent horror for several reasons. Firstly, our focus on atmospheric storytelling and immersive world-building creates a truly captivating experience for audiences. The eerie setting of the abandoned asylum, coupled with supernatural elements and a gripping narrative, sets our film apart.

Additionally, the talented cast, led by Amber Thorn Doug and Craig David Dowsett, brings depth and authenticity to the main characters, enhancing the emotional impact of the story. Furthermore, our commitment to practical effects and innovative cinematography ensures that the visual experience is both stunning and terrifying.

Ultimately, ‘Asylum: Deadly Shadows’ offers a fresh take on the horror genre, blending suspense, supernatural elements, and psychological depth to create a truly unforgettable cinematic experience.”

What do you think the biggest obstacle is for indie filmmakers?

“The biggest obstacle for filmmakers can vary depending on the stage of the filmmaking process and the specific project at hand. Creatively, navigating the complexities of storytelling and ensuring that the vision translates effectively onto the screen can be a significant challenge. Balancing artistic integrity with commercial viability while staying true to the essence of the story is often a delicate endeavor.

Logistically, securing funding, assembling the right team, and managing resources effectively are common hurdles. Additionally, navigating distribution channels and reaching the intended audience in today’s competitive media landscape presents its own set of challenges.

Ultimately, filmmaking is a collaborative and multifaceted endeavor that requires perseverance, creativity, and adaptability to overcome obstacles and bring a project to fruition.”

What horror films inspire your creativity?

“There are many horror films that have left a lasting impression on me and continue to inspire my creativity. Some of these films have shaped my storytelling approach, visual style, and thematic exploration in filmmaking.

Classics like ‘The Shining’ and ‘Psycho’ are timeless examples of psychological horror that have influenced my understanding of tension, atmosphere, and character development. Their masterful direction and evocative cinematography serve as a constant source of inspiration for me.

I’m also drawn to more recent films like ‘Get Out’ and ‘Hereditary,’ which skillfully blend horror with social commentary and psychological depth. These films demonstrate the power of genre filmmaking to address complex themes and provoke thought while still delivering thrilling and unsettling experiences.

In addition to narrative-driven horror, I’m inspired by the visual storytelling and atmospheric world-building found in films like ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ and ‘The Witch.’ Their immersive and meticulously crafted settings transport audiences to otherworldly realms while exploring dark and unsettling themes.

Ultimately, I find inspiration in a diverse range of horror films, from atmospheric slow-burns to visceral thrillers, each offering unique insights into the human condition and the darker aspects of the human psyche. Drawing from these influences, I strive to create films that resonate emotionally, intellectually, and viscerally with audiences.”

What is your favorite horror decade and why?

“My favorite horror decade would have to be the 1980s. It was a golden era for horror cinema, characterized by a diverse range of iconic films spanning various subgenres. From slasher classics like ‘Halloween’ and ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ to supernatural thrillers like ‘The Shining’ and ‘Poltergeist,’ the 1980s produced some of the most enduring and influential horror films of all time.

What I love most about the horror films of the 1980s is their creativity and inventiveness. Filmmakers embraced practical effects and innovative storytelling techniques, resulting in memorable and often groundbreaking cinematic experiences. Additionally, the cultural and social context of the time infused many of these films with layers of subtext and commentary, adding depth and complexity to the genre.

Overall, the 1980s represents a nostalgic and formative period in horror cinema for me, filled with beloved classics and enduring legacies that continue to inspire filmmakers and audiences alike.”
How did you see the indie horror changing over the next decade?

What is the next step in your filmmaking career?

“The next step in my filmmaking career is to continue honing my craft and expanding my creative horizons. I am passionate about exploring new genres, themes, and storytelling techniques, and I’m eager to push the boundaries of my own creativity with each project.

In the immediate future, I have several exciting projects in development, including new film concepts and collaborations with talented filmmakers and artists. I’m also committed to furthering my skills and knowledge through ongoing education and learning from industry professionals.

Ultimately, my goal is to continue creating meaningful and impactful films that resonate with audiences on a deep emotional level. Whether it’s through compelling narratives, immersive visuals, or thought-provoking themes, I aim to connect with viewers and leave a lasting impression with each project.
