‘Satin slip’ nails are like luxury lingerie for your fingertips

We’re well-versed in how a satin eyeshadow is the perfect compromise between a metallic sheen and a soft-focus wash of colour. ‘Satin slip’ nails apply the same aesthetic to fingertips and allow you to go full Y2K next time you wear that perennial ’90s staple: the satin slip dress.

The effect, according to celebrity nail artist Betina Goldstein, is created by rubbing pearl powder over a nail polish and is meant to mimic the high-shine and texture of the fabric. A shortcut is to use a polish that already has a touch of finely-milled shimmer, such as Manicurist Nail Polish in Carnation or OPI Intentions are Rose Gold.

As with any beauty trend worth its salt, ‘satin nails’, ‘satin slip nail polish’ and ‘satin fabric nails’ are all search terms enjoying viral numbers on TikTok, collectively pulling in over 130 billion views. So it’s no wonder that the Internet is flooded with nail artists sharing different iterations of the trend from cool lilac to cosy nude shades including oyster and copper.

The satin slip manicure also recently enjoyed a celebrity moment at the Met Gala. Betina topped a single coat of Chanel Le Vernis in 167 Ballerina with pearl powder for the Inventing Anna actress Julia Garner, which ensured the trend gained a whole new legion of fans.

While plenty of nail art – think watercolour nails and sunflower nails – is like catnip for manicure maximalists, a satin slip manicure is the chic alternative for minimalists, especially as we head into wedding season.

It is also ideal if you want a pearlescent finish but you’re not ready for vanilla chrome nails or full-on opalescent mother-of-pearl nails.
