“Mermaidcore” walks the gamut between wet-look hair that serves up ‘just stepped out of the surf’ vibes and dew-saturated skin with a hint of pearlescent sheen.
The latter, which TikTok has coined ‘mermaidskin’, is so appealing it has amassed over 16 million views, while #mermaidcore has gone viral with 43 million views. Not to mention, the trend is shaping up to be everywhere this season thanks to the S/S23 catwalks.
So perhaps it’s little wonder that mermaidcore has trickled into the red carpet looks at the BAFTAs 2023. Interestingly, it was the antithesis to the more classic red carpet looks on the night, where Hollywood waves and the classic combination of red lipstick and black rimmed eyes were another dominant theme.
It’s also not the first time that wet-look hair has made a splash at these prestigious awards. Last year, Florence Pugh threw down the gauntlet by dying her short hair raven black and styling it slicked back with a gem-adorned side part.
