19 fascinators for weddings and other formal events this season

Fascinators are a staple for many formal occasions, particularly at weddings and the races. Less rigid than a fully fledged hat, most fascinators come as a headband or in the form of a clip, with adornments of feathers, netting and other multi-dimensional accents lending an extravagant finish to your outfit.

To pinpoint the fascinator’s exact origins is nigh on impossible, but even Marie Antoinette was renowned for placing feathers in her already towering updos back in the 1700s. In the 19th century, they became regular accessories in the form of knitted headpieces – think pillboxes, cloches and cocktail hats – before becoming even more popular since then thanks to milliners like Rachel Trevor Morgan, Fabienne Delvigne, Philip Treacy and more (many of whom hold Royal Warrants of Appointment).

Do you match fascinators to your dress or shoes?

While it’s entirely acceptable to base your ensemble around your fascinator, particularly if it’s an elaborate one, it’s best practice to pick your wedding guest dress first and then choose a fascinator to complement it. Matching accessories is something people have done since the dawn of time, but clashing patterns and colours can actually make an outfit these days. Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone with a brightly hued pair of comfortable wedding shoes, clutch bag and headpiece.

How do I choose a fascinator?

You’re not wrong, there are so many options on the market it’s hard to pick exactly which sort is right for you. It’s a good idea to pop into your nearest hat store and try some different shapes on to see what best suits your face and hair style, but the general rule of thumb is that elongated faces tend to suit saucer-style fascinators and more square shapes should opt for wide brimmed hats. There’s no book of regulations, though, so go for the design that appeals to you most.

Coast has recently collaborated with Lisa Tan Millinery on a collection of innovative headwear, including artfully manipulated fascinators, that will add an instant sartorial statement to your formal wardrobe. Our favourite piece? This Side Facing Feather Puff Fascinator which fuses classical elements with a sculptural twist.
