Rihanna is singlehandedly giving ‘maternity style’ a rebrand

In case you’ve been asleep for the last couple of months, you may have missed that Rihanna is pregnant! If you’re now doing anything *but* googling ‘Rihanna’s Maternity Looks’ right now, then we aren’t the same kind of people. If you are googling that, then scroll this way.

While we never once doubted the power of Brand Rihanna, what we could have imagined her – or indeed anyone – doing is singlehandedly rebranding the whole concept of maternity wear. Suffice to say, Rihanna has basically chewed up and spat out the rule book when it comes to pregnancy fashion – which has typically revolved around stretchy fabrics and “flattering”, “bump skimming”, “easy-to-wear” pieces.

Instead she’s done it her own iconic way, and that involves some serious looks that make her growing bump pride of place. Highlights include a 90s inspired green haltertop, *that* Dior Paris Fashion Week get-up (which involved a lingerie set worn under a lacy teddy with knee-high leather boots), and more recently an asymmetrical blue catsuit.

“I’m enjoying not having to worry about covering up my tummy. If I feel a little chubby, it’s like, whatever! It’s a baby,” she recently told People. “Right now, being pregnant, some days you just feel like, ‘Ugh, I just want to lay here on this couch all day.’ But when you put on a little face and a little lipstick, you transform. You put some clothes on, and it’s like, when you look good, you feel good. I’ve heard that for a very long time, but it’s true. It really can get you up off that couch and make you feel like a bad bitch.”

The star announced at the end of January that she is expecting her first child with A$AP Rocky, and naturally the Internet talked about nothing else.

From fans congratulating her and speculating how this may impact the much-anticipated album release to Gigi Hadid accidentally starting a major rumour about the possibility of it being twins (spoiler: the “three angels” she was referring to were “rih/rocky/baby lol”), it’s been one of the most-talked about celebrity stories of 2022 so far.

And if the first influx of Rihanna’s maternity looks are anything to go by, we doubt we’ll be talking about much else for the next few months.

Undeniably one of our generation’s most major style icons, there was no doubt about it that the first-time-mum would bring her A-game to the maternity-wear scene, but even the most devoted members of her Navy couldn’t have anticipated just how lit that A-game would be.

Take the announcement as your first cue. Most celebrities – even the very chicest – reveal their news via a little sonogram image, a professionally-taken intimate shot or perhaps even a red carpet appearance with a surprise plus one bumping along beneath the gown.

Not our Rih, who side-stepped all other routes in favour of a maternity shoot in the middle of the snowy streets of New York. While the bump was undoubtedly the most major talking point, coming a very close second was that pink vintage Chanel puffer coat, plucked from Karl Lagerfeld’s Autumn/Winter 1996 collection.

Pairing the look with a Chanel chain belt and ripped blue jeans, she accessorised the bump like a total pro, adorning it with draped pearl necklaces and a Christian Lacroix crucifix. Let’s face it, this baby is going to have a better wardrobe than the rest of us put together…
