Winterkill

The sixth and possibly final novel in Ragnar Jonasson‘s Dark Iceland series might just be the best. It’s the writing that’s so captivating – thanks in part to translator David Warriner, but also because of the considered way Ragnar highlights the issues that surround a premature death. Set in snowy Siglufjordur in northern Iceland, Winterkill is about the investigation into the death of a 19-year-old woman, who appears to have thrown herself from a second storey balcony. Policeman Ari Thor Arason leads the case and he, and anyone who know the woman, just can’t believe she would commit suicide. The soft pace, tone and use of the unusual setting make for an unforgettable read.
