The nominations for the 2020 Emmy Awards have been revealed and Paul Mescal has been nominated for ‘Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Series Or Movie’.
The 24-year-old actor plays Connell Waldron in the hit BBC and Hulu series Normal People, which received four nods in total, including ‘Outstanding Writing For A Limited Series, Movie Or Dramatic Special’ (author Sally Rooney and Alice Birch), ‘Outstanding Casting For A Limited Series, Movie Or Special’ (Louise Kiely) and ‘Outstanding Directing For A Limited Series, Movie Or Dramatic Special’ for Lenny Abrahamson.
Mescal’s co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones, who plays Marianne, sadly didn’t receive any Emmy nominations but was overjoyed at her friend’s nomination.

Sharing a photo of Mescal and Abrahamson to Instagram, Edgar-Jones wrote: “I could not be more proud of these two utterly incredible people, working with you both has been one of the greatest joys of my life. Also huge congrats to @louisekielycasting, you’re incredible, and also Sally and Alice and @element_pictures, we smashed it.”
Mescal replied: “You are the best person. Properly weeping x.”

Paul also shared his own emotional reaction to his nomination, tweeting: “My actual face right now! Thank you to absolutely everyone at @ElementPictures, @hulu and @bbcthree! @lennyabrahamson I will never be able to thank you enough! @DaisyEdgarJones this only exists because of you and your extraordinary talent it’s as simple as that! Thank you all x”
Speaking to Vulture, Paul also shared his disappointment that Daisy didn’t receive a nomination. “If it was me I would have given her all the love in that category,” he said. “I can’t speak highly enough of the work she did on the show. I know there are extraordinary actresses nominated in that category, but I think Daisy’s work is just phenomenal in this.”

The 72nd Emmy Awards will take place on Monday 21st September, where Paul will go up against Hugh Jackman for Bad Education, Jeremy Pope for Hollywood, Mark Ruffalo for I Know This Much Is True and Jeremy Irons for Watchmen.
