Netflix is really loving The Witcher. Not only did the streamer order a second season of the series a full month ahead of its debut, but now it’s planning a spinoff series! On July 27, Netflix announced plans for a prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin. According to Deadline, the six-part limited series will tell the story of the very first Witcher, 1,200 years before the Henry Cavill-led series takes place. Set in an elven world, Blood Origin will follow the events that lead to the pivotal “conjunction of the spheres,” when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves become one.
1200 years before Geralt of Rivia, the worlds of monsters, men and elves merged into one, and the first Witcher came to be.

The writer of the original Witcher book series, Andrzej Sapkowski, will serve as creative consultant on the prequel series with Declan de Barra, a season one writer of The Witcher serving as executive producer and showrunner, and Lauren Schmidt Hissrich as executive producer, similar to her role as executive producer and showrunner on The Witcher.
“As a lifelong fan of fantasy, I am beyond excited to tell the story The Witcher: Blood Origin,” de Barra said in a statement. “A question has been burning in my mind ever since I first read The Witcher books: What was the elven world really like before the cataclysmic arrival of the humans? I’ve always been fascinated by the rise and fall of civilizations, how science, discovery, and culture flourish right before that fall.”
Hissrich added: “I am so thrilled to collaborate with Declan and the Netflix team on The Witcher: Blood Origin. It’s an exciting challenge to explore and expand The Witcher universe created by Andrzej Sapkowski, and we can’t wait to introduce fans to new characters and an original story that will enrich our magical, mythical world even more.”
This is the second Witcher spinoff announced; in January, Netflix revealed that an animated spinoff film is in the works titled The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. That will focus on the origin story of Geralt’s mentor and fellow Witcher, Vesemir. Keep an eye out for more details on Blood Origin and other possible spinoffs — obviously, we’re not done diving into the wide world of The Witcher just yet!
