“Real Quick” by K-ROLL

K-Roll is the recording moniker for rapper and singer, Kevin Rollinson. Aptly named, his new track “Real Quick” serves as a bit of a crystal ball. Anticipating that his song is a hit, “Real Quick” actually is about the recording process. Featuring Quesh, $DOE$ and Simon Sayz, “Real Quick” is the Greenville, S.C.-based rapper’s debut single.

Colliding, opposite forces in “Real Quick” give it a layer of excitement. The back-and-forth between singing and rapping is smooth. The beat at the core of the song swivels from dingy to elements of rock to hints of traditional beats. He unscrambles what could have been darker, stealthier vibes, but instead makes them light, airy and nimble. His rap style is slow to fast, lingering his way through the words like a shark on the hunt for dinner. Leave it the listener to snoop around and find little nuances in the nooks and crannies of this track.

Tell the DJ / put it into the mix, K-Roll raps. The beat suffocates the listener into a dance dreamland. The moves are easy to follow, the body does want it wants. Boom. Boom. Boom. With a little pop, pop and pop happening, the music mostly electronic but has a twinges of guitar seizing the moment. It’s a relentless river of rival beats and hooks. K-Roll notes in his biography, that he also started out making ringtones, and you can tell that his artistic minds works in a way that leaves no room for chance. He triggers an immediate reaction. Hence, the song’s title takes on a few avenues and aspects. I think even his name suggests he doesn’t waste time. He might downplay some of his vocals and rapping, but the music bed has this cadence that can’t be ignored. The playfulness comes in with the dynamic female lead vocals. Stretching the song into another atmosphere all together, the female vocalist really bolsters the already potent track. Her voice is oozing with confidence and the duet approach fits like a glove in this case. As a listener, I felt content and satisfied that this track took me to a space in my mind that encouraged and kept my hips shaking.

“Real Quick” is an ode to self-discovery. As much as the jagged beats stray, the interlocking comes together by the song’s end. K-Roll’s fluidity and invitation into his studio world should not be taken for granted. It’s a special moment to encounter and even brighter when you think of the time and energy it takes to create music, no matter what genre. I think K-Roll has a knack for finding that instant spark with his listener and looking at his social media presence – he’s just getting started, but turns out, it might be really quick that things will change. I have to hear some more from this guy. Here’s to hoping he releases some more tracks, or a mixtape, soon. We could sure use some encouraging music this summer. “Real Quick” gets high marks from this reviewer.
