Interview with Lexi Todd

You and your music give off such positive vibes – how do you stay so upbeat?

It’s a constant work in progress. For the longest time, I only wrote angry, sad, or jaded music because that’s how I was feeling about my life and the world around me. A couple years ago, I started taking self-care more seriously. I started journaling every day and meditating as much as possible. I also picked yoga back up, which used to be a major part of my life, but I let my practice drop-off for a few years. Throughout that process I was also writing new music about that mental health journey I was on, which is why my new songs are about improving mindset and generally come from a happier place. It’s still a daily struggle to stay positive and trust that everything will work out, especially in an industry that’s constantly grinding you down and telling you you’re not good enough, but I’m actively working on it now.

We LOVE the video for window shopping! Give us some behind the scenes details and in what area of NY was this shoot?

Thanks! Believe it or not, we created the entire video on location the day of the shoot. My creative director, Stephanie Haller, and I both loved the idea of a simple one-take video. With that, we brought on an amazing videographer, choreographer, and actor, chose a date, time, and location, and the rest was created on the spot based on the natural props and surroundings at the location. Since we wanted a single-take video, we knew we had to pick a place that was relatively remote. But we also wanted it to feel genuinely me, which is why we wanted to keep it in Brooklyn, where I’ve lived for the past 6 years. We decided to shoot in Red Hook, Brooklyn because it’s a pretty remote area (for Brooklyn, that is)–not a lot of public transportation goes there, so we thought it’d be the easiest place to shoot locally without having to manage with a huge crowd. There are also a bunch of locally-owned shops there with beautiful window displays, which we knew would play perfectly with the concept. We shot maybe 10 full takes in the end, and we definitely had some funny and awkward moments with random pedestrians. There was this one guy in particular that seemed to keep coming back to purposely ruin our takes! We waited him out eventually, and got the one shot take we were going for.

If you could only listen to one song on repeat for a solid week. What song would you choose?

I do that all the time actually! I get super obsessed with one song and analyze every detail of it. Right now that song is Maggie Rogers’ new single “Love You For A Long Time.”

Can you give us the inside scoop on any new music you plan to release?

I’m planning to release another single in late January. I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s going to be a more up-beat, r&b flavored track. I’m very excited to share it!
