We Like To See What Actors Bring To The Characters

Joe and Anthony Russo are opening up about Avengers: Doomsday and explaining why they started shooting the Marvel film without a finished script.

In a new interview, the Russo brothers shared why they “view the script as a living organism.”

“We’re improvisation-based, rehearsal-based directors,” Joe Russo told AP. “We like to see what the actors bring to the characters, and sometimes you don’t get the actors until a few days or few weeks before you shoot them. And a lot of the time, that’s when the magic happens.”

Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released on December 18 as part of Phase 6 of the MCU. The film follows 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which the Russos also directed.

Amid speculation about superhero fatigue on the big screen, Spider-Man: Brand New Day showed that audiences are still there and will show up in droves.

When asked about Avengers: Doomsday restoring order in the MCU following several fumbles, Anthony said, “It’s part of the unique challenge. The thing that Joe and I have always appreciated about our collaboration with Marvel is: Our job isn’t to answer for the entirety of the MCU. We intersect it in a very specific way. It’s that intersection which is where we can make sense of things.”

Avengers: Doomsday will feature different groups of heroes from different universes, including the Avengers, the Wakandans from Black Panther, the Thunderbolts (known as the New Avengers) from Earth-616, the Fantastic Four from Earth-828, and the original X-Men.
