Slayyyter Covers Hole’s “Violet” for Like a Version: Watch

Slayyyter was the latest guest to appear on Triple J’s Like a Version series, and she performed a rousing cover of Hole’s “Violet.”

You may know Slayyyter as a pop artist, but her cover of “Violet” shows just how hard she can rock. She mirrors Courtney Love’s impassioned wail but adds even more rasp and careful control; credit also to her band, who provide plenty of space for Slayyyter to utilize her moody alto before soaring in each chorus. It’s a perfect combination of the feral extremity explored in her latest album, WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA, with the dynamism and grit of ’90s rock. Watch her rendition below.

Slayyyter’s “Violet” cover has already gotten the attention of Love herself. On Instagram, Love reposted the Like a Version reel and wrote, “@slayyyter will in fact not be returning to St. Louis. She’s employed me to run the salon . Keep wiping the floors with us . It’s a DELIGHT ! 💋💋💋.” Slayyyter responded in a comment, writing, “hope we made you proud 😭🖤🙏🏻”

Slayyyter also detailed why she chose to cover the Hole classic, saying in a behind-the-scenes interview with Triple J that the band’s 1994 LP Live Through This “was really impactful” for her in high school. “When I came across this album, I just loved Courtney’s voice. I fell in love with this record. And there’s something emotional about this song,” she said. “I think it was one of the first songs I tried to teach myself to play on guitar, and I always really just felt like it has this kind of emotional quality and this rawness to it.” Watch the brief interview below.

Slayyyter revealed her third album, WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA, back in March; since then, she’s made her late-night TV debut, commanded crowds at Coachella, Governors Ball, and Lollapalooza, and offered the new single, “brand new chanel$.” She’s on tour in North America this fall, kicking off the run in Los Angeles on August 23rd.
