Finding the best plus size shapewear honestly has one of the worst reputations in fashion, and I get why.
For years we were sold the idea that we had to sculpt and squeeze ourselves into uncomfortable, rib-crushing bodysuits, waist trainers, miracle suits, harsh boning and high waisted shapewear shorts just to feel like we deserved to wear the dress we wanted. Not to mention trying to achieve that ‘hourglass shape’ that was all the rage not too long ago. Thankfully, we’re finally moving away from that narrative, and solutionwear is being used more as a finishing touch as opposed to a must-wear.
SKIP TO:
For me, it’s never been about making myself smaller. I have a big bum, hips and a FUPA that, in my opinion, isn’t a problem to solve, it’s part of who I am. Sometimes, though, I simply want a smoother silhouette under a bodycon dress or a pair of shorts to stop the dreaded thigh chafe in summer.
PSA: You absolutely do not need shapewear to wear the clothes you love. But if it’s something you enjoy wearing, it should work with your body, not against it. Ahead, I’ve rounded up the very best plus size shapewear that’s genuinely comfortable, supportive and available in inclusive sizing. Because if we’re going to wear it, it might as well earn its place in our drawers.
Why you can trust me:
As a plus size model I’ve also tried more shapewear, corsets, SPANX and high waisted briefs, than I care to admit. Some pieces have rolled themselves into a belt before I’d even left the house, others have left me counting down the minutes until I could peel them off, and a few have genuinely earned a permanent place in my wardrobe – like the below M&S style. Whether it’s smoothing under a satin dress, preventing a rash during a heatwave or finding pieces that actually stay put all day, I’ve learnt the hard way what works and what doesn’t.
How did I test the best shapewear?
When selecting the pieces for this guide, I looked at comfort, support, fit, breathability, size inclusivity, fabric quality and whether each style stayed in place throughout the day. I also considered value for money, because shapewear isn’t something you should have to replace after a handful of wears. I’ve looked at the most popular shaping body options from Skims, open bust bodysuits from Spanx, breathable tank tops with soft shoulder straps from Shapermint, and anti chafe shaping shorts from Better Tights.
