‘Cape Fear’ Creator “Always Wanted” Juliette Lewis In Series Reboot

SPOILERS: This post contains details about the Cape Fear episode ‘Phantom Sensations

With a nod to the source material’s previous adaptation, this week’s episode of Cape Fear was a long time coming for creator Nick Antosca.

The Apple TV+ series showrunner recently noted that he “always wanted” Juliette Lewis to join the cast after she starred in the 1991 Martin Scorsese-helmed Cape Fear, based on the 1962 film and the 1957 John D. MacDonald novel The Executioners. He also worked with the Oscar-nominated actress on his 2019 Hulu limited series The Act.

“I always wanted Juliette to be in it,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I knew from that point, from even just the initial conversation about the rights, that I would love to have her be in it because she showed up for one episode in The Act. She was so great. And so I wanted to work with her again.”

Antosca added, “Years later, when we were actually making the show, we called her and said, ‘Hey, remember I talked about that a little bit — you want to come do it?’ And fortunately she was available.”

Noting he’s “always been a fan” of Lewis, Antosca raved, “I obviously tremendously admired her performance in the 1991 Cape Fear movie, as well as Natural Born Killers and tons of other things.”

In Friday’s episode ‘Phantom Sensations’, Lewis mostly appears in a hoodie and face mask, stalking the ex-convicted felon Max Cady (Javier Bardem) until he gets home to find that she’s broken into his house and left him a video message, which sends him into a violent rage.

Also making a cameo in the episode is Martin Scorsese’s daughter Francesca, playing an influencer discussing the case in a video on social media. Martin serves as an executive producer on the series with Steven Spielberg.

Apple TV’s Cape Fear stars Bardem as brutal ex-con Max Cady, who goes after DA Tom (Patrick Wilson) and attorney Anna Bowden (Amy Adams), the married couple who is responsible for him going to prison 17 years before.

In the 1991 adaptation, Robert De Niro starred as Max Cady, with Nick Nolte and Jessica Lange as Samuel and Leigh Bowden. At age 18, Lewis earned her first Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for her performance as daughter Danielle.
