Gwyneth Paltrow Has “Cherished Every Chapter” of Motherhood – Meet Her Kids

Apple Blythe Alison Martin was born in London on May 14, 2004. While the couple was quick to make headlines for the unique name they chose for their daughter, Paltrow later revealed the adorable meaning behind the moniker. “Basically it was because, when we were first pregnant, her daddy said one day, if it’s a girl I think her name should be Apple, and it just sounded so sweet and it conjures such a lovely picture for me, you know apples are so sweet and they’re wholesome and it’s biblical and I just thought it sounded so lovely,” Paltrow told Oprah Winfrey (via People). “And then she was born and it became an international outrage which I found surprising because there are people named Rose or Lily or Ivy or June or lots of pretty nouns.”

Despite her parents being famous and well off, Apple got to work at a young age, with her dad telling Ellen DeGeneres in January 2020 that she was working in retail ahead of her 16th birthday. “My daughter works in a clothing store,” he gushed. “It’s her first job and she’s about to be 16. And I’m so proud of her. She’s making her way in the world.”

After graduating high school, Apple was college-bound, though it’s unclear which school she chose to attend. What is clear, however, is that Paltrow was not ready to let go just yet. “It’s a huge change because she’s really hilarious, and she’s got a big presence,” Paltrow told James Corden (via People). “So when we’re around the dinner table now, and someone comes over and says to Moses, ‘What is it like with your sister not home?’ he says, ‘Quiet.’ “

In May 2023, Apple’s birthday fell on Mother’s Day, and Paltrow took the opportunity to publicly praise her daughter. “Happy Birthday my angel,” she wrote. “Thank you for sharing your birthday this year with Mother’s Day, a fitting conjugation, a double celebration of you and what you have given to me- the GIFT of being your mom. I love you so deeply and wholly, it defies articulation. To behold you as a 19 year old woman fills my heart with almost unbearable love, pride and meaning! I can’t take it! Thank you for making me brunch, I am making you dinner!! I love you so much, forever and ever, mama.”
