Dolly Parton Announces New Rock Album Featuring Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Lizzo, Miley Cyrus, and More

Mick Fleetwood, Sting, Elton John, Joan Jett, Emmylou Harris, Sheryl Crow, Michael McDonald, and many others appear on Parton’s Rockstar

Dolly Parton, who was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year, has announced a new rock album called Rockstar. The 30-track effort features a ton of rock stars, who typically feature on new versions of songs they made famous. For example, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr play the Beatles “Let It Be” with Parton. In addition, Sting features on a new version of the Police’s “Every Breath You Take,” and Miley Cyrus features on the new “Wrecking Ball.” Meanwhile, Parton covers Prince’s “Purple Rain” and she recruits Lizzo to cover Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” See the full Rockstar tracklist at Consequence.

Famously, Dolly Parton initially declined her nomination for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. “I don’t feel that I have earned that right,” Parton, a country music legend, wrote. “I really do not want votes to be split because of me, so I must respectfully bow out.”

Parton eventually accepted her nomination, explaining, “It was always my belief that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame was for the people in rock music, and I have found out lately that it’s not necessarily that.” At the induction ceremony, she performed “Jolene” with Judas Priest’s Rob Halford, Pat Benatar, Brandi Carlile, Annie Lennox, and more.

On Thursday, May 11, Parton is going to release her new song “World on Fire” and also perform it at the Academy of Country Music Awards. “This is a song I felt very inspired to write,” Parton said of the new single in a statement. “I think it speaks about everything and to everyone this day and time. I hope it is something that will touch you and maybe touch enough people to want to make a change for the better.”

In addition, Parton said of her album: “I’m so excited to finally present my first rock’n’roll album, Rockstar! I am very honored and privileged to have worked with some of the greatest iconic singers and musicians of all time and to be able to sing all the iconic songs throughout the album was a joy beyond measure. I hope everybody enjoys the album as much as I’ve enjoyed putting it together!”

Rockstar is out November 17 via Butterfly Records. It follows Parton’s March 2022 studio LP, Run, Rose, Run.
