Jennifer Alvarado and the Evolution of ‘Love Came Down’

Congratulations on your latest music ‘ Love Came Down’ Jennifer! What is the biggest tip you followed when creating the sound?

I actually wrote this song back in 2018.  The song was recorded by someone else and released.  I thought they did a great job; however, I always felt a disconnect with the song.  There were elements like the cello, etc. that I felt like we’re missing and it was in turn not my vision for the song.  I always knew at some point I would rerecord it.  It is now that time and I am proud that it is the first single off my upcoming Christmas project that will be out in 2023.  My biggest tip is to listen to your gut when it comes to your music.  Because it was not just my project at the time, I bowed out of certain decisions, but in the end you will never be happy with it if you just settle.

How did the sound evolve from the start to the finish?

My producer and I discussed every detail of this song.  I wanted it to be a clear representation of the theme and style of the Christmas album I will be releasing next year.  Most of my projects are very guitar driven and have rock and pop elements laced throughout.  This Christmas project is very stripped down in comparison.  I want it to feel like we are gathering in the living room around the Christmas tree.

Any tricks up your sleeve when making the music?

I feel like I am very fortunate to have my producer, Ricky Rodriguez.  We have worked together for eight years.  There are times we disagree, but overall, he really understands my vision.  We are on the same page 99.9% of the time.  Beyond that, we respect each other enough to be honest and say an idea “sucks” and we aren’t offended.  I think that creative freedom allows continued growth.

Was there a collection of ideas that you had or did you have a really specific idea on the music?

Usually when I go into the studio, I have already pulled together 10-12 songs and made a project story.  Some projects require more edge where some of my future projects are going to require more acoustic elements and simplicity.  I usually already have a specific concept in mind and then we begin creating the aural storyline.

How much time do you demand of yourself to focus on music?

I want to be working on my music in some capacity every day.  Now, that looks like different things.  One day, maybe I will be focusing on new covers or practicing for upcoming gigs.  The next, might look like scheduled co-writes or interviews.  For so long, I put my music on the back burner and told myself I would work on it when I had the chance.  God gave me that chance, so I want to be a good steward of that time.

Do you have any tips or tricks for our audience on how to manage your time when it comes to making sure your music is on track for release?

Yes.  Create a calendar.  And give yourself adequate time to do a pre-release and post-release campaign.  For me, I try to have a good month of promo charted out for a single release.  That allows you to come get a press release drafted and sent to local press and other potential press outlets.  It also allows you time to reach out to possible stations that may premiere your song and help you promote it.   Time is a necessity.
