Jennifer Lawrence just revealed her baby boy’s name

New mum Jennifer Lawrence is still feeling out where her boundaries lie when it comes to discussing her son, whom she gave birth to earlier this year.

The Causeway actor previously told Vanity Fair during her pregnancy that “every instinct in my body wants to protect their privacy for the rest of their lives, as much as I can. I don’t want anyone to feel welcome into their existence. And I feel like that just starts with not including them in this part of my work.”

After it was reported that she gave birth to her first child with husband Cooke Maroney, an art gallerist she married in 2019, the typically candid star kept the baby’s sex and name under wraps. In a new Vogue cover story, however, she opened up a bit more, confirming to writer Abby Aguirre that she’d had a baby boy that the couple named Cy, after one of Maroney’s favorite artists, the painter Cy Twombly.

She declined to share more about either baby or husband, but was willing to discuss her experience as a new mother.

“I was just so in love,” she recalled of meeting baby Cy. “I also fell in love with all babies everywhere. Newborns are just so amazing. They’re these pink, swollen, fragile little survivors. Now I love all babies. Now I hear a baby crying in a restaurant and I’m like, Awwww, preciousssss.

Of course, she understands that her feelings are not universal. Luckily, she adds, she was well-prepared to handle any and all emotions new mothers can experience.

“It’s so scary to talk about motherhood. Only because it’s so different for everybody,” she said. “If I say, It was amazing from the start, some people will think, It wasn’t amazing for me at first, and feel bad. Fortunately I have so many girlfriends who were honest. Who were like, It’s scary. You might not connect right away. You might not fall in love right away. So I felt so prepared to be forgiving. I remember walking with one of my best friends at, like, nine months, and being like, Everyone keeps saying that I will love my baby more than my cat. But that’s not true. Maybe I’ll love him as much as my cat?

She also projected a bit about Cy’s future, as the best of us are wont to do, theorising about the content of his future therapy sessions (which always lead back to mom, don’t they?): “She wouldn’t put me down. She kisses me on the mouth. She asked me not to go to college.”

Mostly, though, Jennifer Lawrence’s experience has been a lesson in love. “My heart has stretched to a capacity that I didn’t know about,” she said. “I include my husband in that. And then they’re both just, like, out there—walking around, crossing streets. He’s gonna drive one day. He’s gonna be a stupid teenager and be behind the wheel of a car. And I’m just gonna be like, Good night! You know? Like, who sleeps?
