Carole Middleton Borrows Her Daughter Kate Middleton’s Dress to Attend the Royal Ascot

While it’s usually daughters who raid their mom’s closets, Carole Middleton dipped into her royal daughter’s wardrobe to find her latest look.

The Party Pieces founder attended the first day of the Royal Ascot on Tuesday in a pink shirt dress previously worn by Kate Middleton. She was joined at the event by her husband Michael Middleton, but her daughter and her husband Prince William were not present as they were busy attending a memorial service commemorating the fifth anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire. The royal couple is expected to attend the five-day horse race at another point later this week.

The Duchess of Cambridge previously wore the simple, yet elegant color-block look by ME+EM last year while visiting with Mila Sneddon, a 5-year-old girl battling leukemia. Before meeting in person, the royal and Sneddon spoke over the phone as part of the “Hold Still” photography project spearheaded by the royal, during which Kate learned that the little girl’s favorite color is pink. She told her at the time, “I have to make sure I go and try to find myself a pink dress. Hopefully, when one day, hopefully, Mila, we’ll get to meet, and then I’ll remember to wear my pink dress for you.” When the pair were finally able to meet in person in May 2021, the duchess wore the pink ME+EM maxi dress and Mila also wore a light pink dress of her own, complete with a tiara fit for a future queen.

The whole Middleton family seems to have an open-door policy when it comes to their closets as last year Carole also lent her 1980 wedding gown to her future daughter-in-law Alizée Thevenet to wear for her wedding to Carole’s son James Middleton. The bride told Hello! magazine at the time, “My something borrowed was in fact my dress from my mother-in-law Carole who last wore it 41 years ago on her wedding day in June, 1980. While talking about dresses with Carole and sharing ideas during lockdown for inspiration, I tried on her wedding dress and fell in love with it. It fitted me perfectly and was exactly what I wanted. It always troubled me that wedding dresses are only worn once, so it was amazing to give such a beautiful dress a second lease of life.”
