Doug Kistner Shares His Amazing Musical Message

“Only Road I Know” and “Since We Left Our Dreams” are the two newest singles from superstar keyboard player and vocalist, Doug Kistner. Kistner who’s had a lengthy career working with names like John Waite, Blood Wear, and Tears, and the Trans Siberian Orchestra makes his first steps forward with his burgeoning solo career, all while still actively being involved with projects like The Lords of 52nd St and in Glen Burtnik’s Sumer of Love. He’s certainly a man who likes to keep busy and in between working with those who no doubt influenced him he’s always been picking up tricks of the trade to put back into his own work. So how does it hold up? I’d argue more than well.

These songs are snappy, poppy, and filled with charm. Yes, these are considered Yacht Rock or “Dad Rock” if you wanna call it that, but what’s wrong with that? Plenty of those earlier acts became all-timers for a reason. “Only Road I Know” makes for a comforting familiar intro, relishing in the little things like tickling keys, a groovy electric guitar before Kistner’s voice comes in. I’m not sure if prior to this he primarily worked as a backup vocalist because the first impression might be a little rocky, I’m not sure if it’s because of the composition or what, but when his vocals are amplified with duplication choir effects, it’s like something inside the song changes and suddenly it’s all working so well.

“Since We Left Our Dreams” is a slight change that builds on top of the proceeding song. I’m already anxiously awaiting what the inevitable album will sound like hopefully that it’ll be released sooner than later. It’s just like riding a boat on a wave of memories, and you enjoy every bit of the mist that brings you back. That might be why it’s called Yacht Rock (yes I know the real reason) but there’s something peaceful even as the music rackets up and the notes get higher and the emotions climax and everyone is just at their best here. The songs in their length cover what most albums take a third to do, coming in at under 10 minutes, but these are the kinds of songs that are perfect for road trips and get-togethers.

It’s a very social kind of song especially with the various components at play from the other members like Mike Todd, Dave Anthony, and Richie Cannata. Closing out, these songs are once again, just great. They’re refreshing and inspired and cut from the cloth of people who really do love what they do. The message is uplifting and positive and something that should be shared with others and I think these guys can truly transcend generational gaps if they keep this up. Music is circular, and old becomes new again and this is a perfect example. This kind of music never went away, it just took a hibernation, but now Kistner is here to make us remember since these are his dreams he left behind for us.
