Jenn DeSantis – “I Wanna’ Know”

If you haven’t heard of singer/songwriter Jenn DeSantis, well, you’re in for a real treat. One of indie music’s most chatted about talents is sending out powerful vibes in the earworm “I Wanna Know”. DeSantis, who released a five-song EP last year called Chromatic Heart, catches wildfire with the ultra-catchy “I Wanna Know”. Not only will you find yourself rooting for DeSantis, you’ll find yourself humming the song days and weeks later.

Singing about the downfalls of unrequited love and being a bit stuck in her head about the one never getting true love in the end,  “I Wanna Know” has semblances of glee and a tinge of sadness. The backing music, a jolly ride of zipper merging bass beats and high hat melodies transports the listener to a neon-ride. Intermingled with her vocals is this fun, trumpet-like wah-wah-wah. It’s like a bouncing toy. Again, very joyful. DeSantis, who grew up in Pennsylvania, has an interesting voice. Sometimes the octaves she throws out are curled at the ends, and the more you listen, she sounds like she’s in the same room. She’s very endearing. Her voice is made for the pop world, but I could also hear her singing a variety of genres. I hear some Americana for sure, and even soul. She’s limitless.

DeSantis, who graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Industry from State University New York at Oneonta (SUNY-Oneonta), has moved to Los Angeles. Maybe that’s the brighter spots on “I Wanna Know”. This ray of sunshine, this bursting light that seems to filter in the murky and kaleidoscope music bed could likely be the California sun’s influence. It’s a freeing sound, a rejuvenation. She’s been hurting for a long time and this song sounds like an awakening, a re-introduction to herself. You can hear the lessons learned in her voice; you can hear between the lines the comfort she’s arrived at in terms of her own confidence.

And the song is pretty fun to dance, too. That backbeat, that relentless bass rhythm is just too euphoric to ignore. DeSantis’ vocals mixed with this viral beat is just the makings of a great pop rock / electronic song we need in our lives. I think her timing is perfect and it’s a great distraction for any music fan. The singer behind 2017’s “Someone Else” continues to captures the words us mere non-artists strive for to convey our romantic thoughts, but also our insecurities. She makes it seem like we’re all in this together, we’ve all had those days when the cookie doesn’t ever seem to crumble our way. “I Wanna Know” doesn’t have to be a love song. It can also present itself to the listener as a way to encourage themselves when some days just kind of suck at work, or on the tennis court. You have it within you and you deserve the best, DeSantis impresses to the listener in “I Wanna Know”. Impressive, inspiriting and intuitive – DeSantis continues to create art that adds to the conversation.
