Seth Meyers Zeroes In On “Apocalyptic Nature” Of Trump Presidency: “I Feel Like I’m In A YA Novel”

The past couple of weeks in the United States have consisted of even more of COVID-19 cases, wildfires scorching parts of the West Coast and orange skies and clouds of smoke replacing the normal blue ones. Seth Meyers says that all the major happenings affecting the U.S. can bring Americans to the conclusion that “everything is broken.”

Rich ghouls are dismantling the Post Office, kids can’t go to school, there are massive lines at food banks, we are nearing 200,000 COVID-19 deaths, and in the West, millions of acres have burned; and air itself is a health hazard and the sky is literally orange,” Meyers listed on Monday’s episode of Late Night

In typical Late Night fashion, Meyers criticized the sitting president for his leadership, or lack thereof, as the country continues to see crisis after crisis. He blasted President Donald Trump for holding an indoor rally in Nevada, wherein some un-masked visitors maintained little social distance from each other, while COVID-19 numbers continue to rise in 11 states across the country.

He went on to speak about the nation’s current condition, joking that not even aliens would want to stop by. But with extraterrestrial beings or not, Meyers said the state of the country under Trump makes him feel like he’s living in an alternate universe.

“You know the apocalyptic nature of the Trump era has really been on the nose in many ways, but even I never thought we would have to lock ourselves inside, wear face masks while the sky turns blood red,” he said. “I feel like I’m in a YA novel. The only thing we’re missing is Forest Whitaker in a mech suit telling us we need to find time crystals to restore balance to the universe.”

As daunting as the year 2020 has been, from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic to the California wildfires, Meyers said there might be a light at the end of the tunnel. Like all successful Young Adult novels, Meyers joked that there could be a film adaptation to follow the historic year.

“The only upside to 2020 is there’s a good chance the film adaptation will star Jennifer Lawrence and Timothée Chalamet,” he said.
