‘The Tonight Show’: Jimmy Fallon Recaps Second Night Of Democratic National Convention

After the first night of the 2020 Democratic National Convention saw a fiery speech from former first lady Michelle Obama, night two of the DNC featured another slew of notable speakers.

Jimmy Fallon recapped Tuesday’s series of speeches and performances on his The Tonight Show segment “News & Jokes.” He began his segment recalling how Obama stole Monday’s show after taking aim at President Donald Trump.

“She really brought the heat when she is President Trump’s own words against him,” he said.

While Obama’s presentation was still fresh on his mind, Fallon went on to point out Tuesday speeches from former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter. He joked that while Bill Clinton had the spotlight at this year’s convention, speaking against Trump and his handling of COVID-19, he was sure wife and former presidential candidate Hilary Clinton was also present somewhere in the background.

“This is fun during the speech you could see Hillary in the background throwing uppercuts at frozen slabs of meat,” he quipped.

Fallon also took aim at another speaker on Tuesday’s roster: Jimmy Carter. The former president joined wife Rosalynn Carter to tout their support for Biden as a presidential candidate. While Carter spoke about Biden’s character and his ability to “restore America’s greatness,” Fallon figured out why he was on the lineup.

“Jimmy Carter also spoke tonight. That’s how old Joe Biden is they brought Jimmy Carter to rally in the youth vote,” he joked.

While a majority of the skit’s attention was on the Democrats’ Tuesday showing of support for Biden, Fallon made sure to mention next week’s upcoming Republican National Convention.

Following the impressive collection of speakers for the DNC, Fallon criticized speakers potentially set to make an appearance at the Republican convention. Mark and Patricia McCloskey, a St. Louis couple who pointed guns at Black Lives Matter protestors, were invited to speakers at next week’s Republican event.

“Democrats are featuring first responders, virus victims, anti-racism activists and Trump was like who went viral for something dumb?” Fallon joked about the RNC speaker selection.

He also went on to note how President Trump had asked for permits to display fireworks at the Washington monument, which the host jokes Trump resorted to after officials told him “it was impossible to have lasers shoot out of the eyes of Mount Rushmore.”

But even if fireworks at the National Mall landmark don’t pan out, Fallon said that Trump need fret not as he can easily find a substitute.

“If they can’t get the fireworks permit Trump’s going to have the couple from St. Louis fire a few rounds into the sky,” he said.
