An A-list hairdresser reveals exactly what to ask for when you return to the salon depending on your specific hairstyle

Back in March when lockdown started, it didn’t feel much like spring, we were still wearing wintery clothes (before the unseasonal heatwave) and our hair was as far away from summer gorgeousness as possible.

Fast forward three months and we are diving, head first, into the peak of summer where it’s still light at 9pm and Pimm’s is totally acceptable to drink at every opportunity. If, like us, it feels like you’re coming out of hibernation and not quite prepared to debut sun-kissed locks and beachy waves, we’re here to help.

As hair salons plan to reopen in July, Glasgow-based hair stylist Jack Baxter, who’s worked with the likes of H&M, Erdem and TIGI, gives you the lowdown on some of the 2020 hair trends you may have missed during the pandemic plus some helpful tips to ask your hairdresser during your first appointment after lockdown.

If you have a bob or lob…

“If you had a super sharp bob or a textured lob prior to lockdown you will be dying to get back to the salon and have that shape cut back into your hair. To keep your style bang on trend for 2020, experiment with layers and don’t be afraid to try a little disconnection in your cut. By this I mean shorter layers can be your BFF even if your hair is shorter in length. This can give your hair lots of movement and definition which will instantly elevate your style.”

If you’re blonde with overgrown roots…

“All the blondes out there will be thrilled at the thought of banishing that stretched root but now is the time to slow down on the full head of highlights. To bring your look up to date, ask your hairdresser to work with your natural root colour and enhance this instead of covering it. Adding a few slices of lighter colour round your face to frame your complexion and brighten your colour could be enough to have a big impact and keep your look low maintenance. This is best for your purse and your hair’s health.”

If you have a one-length long style…

“Your hair will feel a lot longer than it did at the start of lockdown if it was long to begin with. My advice would be to use this time to be brave and embrace change. Whether you try out a layered fringe or go for the chop altogether, change is welcome! For that post lockdown glow-up you need to make a statement and one length long hair is no longer super chic.”

If you’re sporting some greys…

“If grey roots have been your enemy during quarantine, no doubt you’ll want to get rid ASAP. For the older generation this may be your chance to embrace your natural colour and the gorgeous ageing process. Natural grey and silver hair can be so elegant and chic. Ask your hairdresser to give you a glossing treatment to give your silver locks some shine and embrace the natural regrowth. You will never look back.”
