This Mother’s Day, the GLAMOUR team share the beauty advice their mothers taught them

It is usually a time for loved ones to come together in celebration, this year’s Mother’s Day will undoubtedly be a little different, with social distancing measures in place across the UK in a bid to slow the spread of the novel Coronavirus.

But this doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate. On the contrary, we should show the mothers in our lives our appreciation, love and support in every way we possibly can, whether that be with a heartfelt video message, a thoughtful home delivery or, if you’re lucky enough to live close by, a walk in the park to enjoy the budding Spring flowers together (while staying 2 metres away from one another, of course).

From being a shoulder to cry on during times of crisis, to teaching us valuable lessons that made us better people, to the advice and knowledge they have shared with us, where would we be without our mothers and mother figures?

Here, the GLAMOUR team pay tribute to their own, thanking them for the precious beauty titbits, hacks and advice they have shared…

Deborah Joseph, Editor In Chief
Whenever I had dry or chapped hands as a child, my mum would smother them in Vaseline and then wrap them in Clingfilm before I went to bed – it really works.

Lottie Winter, Beauty Editor

My mum pretty much taught me everything I know about beauty, from how to look after my skin, to how to shape my eyebrows, to how to shave my legs to avoid razor bumps. But if I had to choose one the best piece of advice she taught me, it would be not to sunbathe. She has always stayed out of the sun, wearing a high factor sun cream, and her skin is enviably smooth to this day. Oh, and she told me to stop putting concealer on my lips as a teenager, which in hindsight, was very good advice.

Chelsea Hughes, Picture Editor

My mum always taught me to always pluck your eyebrows from the bottom to give them a little lift, which works wonders when you’re a little tired. Plus, it means I’ve never over-plucked them as I’ve always left the top alone.

Serena Connolly, Executive Assistant to Editor-in-Chief & Publishing Director
My mum always told me to never forget to apply moisturiser to my my décolletage when I’m moisturising my face, as people so often forget to do so. She always says, “twice a day to keep lines away!” and I have to say she’s totally right.

Camilla Newman, Publishing Director

My Mum told me never to leave the house without a touch of rouge and lipgloss as “you never know who you’re going to bump into”. True enough, I ran into an old flame last week with my hair scraped back and not a scrap of makeup on and wished I’d heeded her advice!

Katie Teehan, Managing Editor

My mum Helen has always been religious about her skincare. She’s taught me that you can play around with cheaper makeup, but it’s worth spending money on good-quality cleansers, serums, moisturisers and getting regular facials. And she always tells me to apply skincare to my neck and décolletage as well as my face. It’s obviously worked for her – I might be a tiny bit biased, but she looks at least 10 years younger than she is.

Donna Dia, Events Director
My Mum has always told me to moisturise, moisturise, moisturise and also never ever forget to exfoliate your armpits, elbows and bum.

Sophie Cockett, Commerce Writer

My mum swears that the secret to good skin is never going to sleep with your makeup on. No matter how many glasses of wine you’ve had or how tired you are. Oh, and moisturising upwards so you don’t get wrinkles! She doesn’t have a fine line in sight, so she must be doing something right…
