The 34th annual Gotham Awards kick off the fall awards season in New York City Monday night with 39 feature films and 25 performances nominated in ten award categories for outstanding and breakthrough performances and films, director, and screenplay.
The gala is taking place at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City and attendees and nominees on the red carpet included Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Zendaya, Guy Pearce, Rachel Brosnahan, Natasha Lyonne, Katy O’Brian, Kieran Culkin, Danielle Deadwyler, Colman Domingo, Sebastian Stan, Mikey Madison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Saoirse Ronan, Aubrey Plaza, Justice Smith, Izac Wang, and many more.
Neon’s Cannes Palm d’Or-winner Anora currently still in theaters, led, the noms which were announced in late October tapped Luca Guagadnino’s Challengers and RaMell Ross’ Nickel Boys with performances by Demi Moore in The Substance and Nicole Kidman in Babygirl. While some big budget entrees are now welcome up to a point, nominations were very indie and spread among a great clutch of films from Didi to The Brutalist to A Real Pain, The Last Showgirl and I Saw The TV Glow and documentaries Union and Soundtrack To A Coup d’Etat.
Many if not most nominees have been recognized on the festival circuit had had some theatrical exposure. Ramping up the star power are special tributes as the event is set to honor Zendaya with The Gothams Spotlight Tribute; Angelina Jolie will receive The Gothams Performer Tribute; Timothee Chalamet and James Mangold The Gothams Visionary Tribute.
Denis Villeneuve will receive the Director Tribute; The Piano Lesson is set for The Gothams Ensemble Tribute; and Sing Sing The Gothams Social Justice Tribute.
