Dua Lipa Is Playing A Mermaid In Barbie

If you’re a Dua Lipa fan, you’ve probably been wondering about the details of her role in Barbie after seeing her on the cast list. At the European premiere she discussed her character on the red carpet, confirming she’s not just singing as Mermaid Barbie. It comes after a poster with a glimpse at her costume and character had already revealed that shocker: she’s not in pink!

In an interview at the London premiere she confirmed that collaborator Mark Ronson was the one who got her onto the plastic fantastic set.

Dua told The Upcoming that Mark had asked her to work on a dance track together for the movie with him, to which she obviously agreed and so the track, Dance The Night was born.

Working on the soundtrack with Mark then led to Dua being approached by director Greta Gerwig who told her: “I’d really like you to be mermaid Barbie.” Naturally, Dua agreed. “I couldn’t have been happier with my character,” she added, before saying she’d love to steal “all of” her costumes. So, it seems the doll role is more than a short cameo for the Grammy-winner if she’s got multiple looks.

The plot of the new Barbie movie has been kept under wraps for the most part, though the fact that there are multiple Barbies aside from lead character Margot Robbie — who plays the most traditional iteration of the 64-year-old doll — was revealed early on in the movie’s promotions via oh-so meme-able character posters of the cast. The portraits feature a glittery badge, covered with a picture of the actors doing their thing, and a tagline saying “This Barbie is…”

In Dua’s she can be seen rocking a blue wig and tail, as the words “a mermaid” complete the sentence on her poster. Hopefully she’s not too sad about being sea-locked.

So far, we know the identity of other Barbies in the movie to be doctors (Hari Nef), diplomats (Nicola Coughlan) and humans (America Ferrera) from the posters. But exactly how their roles will play into Margot’s journey from Barbie Land to real life remains to be seen.

Barbie is released 21 July.
