We know that you know that trench coats are a forever wardrobe staple, but for SS23, it’s short trench coats that have peaked our interest the most. Thanks to one chic Arket style in particular. The cool younger sister to the classic cut, they’re just as chic and smart as their longer counterparts, but with a cute cropped silhouette and slightly more playful vibe. We’re ready to make the investment.
It’s a fashion myth that trench coats originated as uniform for soldiers during WWI – they were actually in service decades before, as practical waterproof outerwear for men. As with all fashion icons, the trench coat evolved and from the 1940s onwards a trench became a shortcut for spy-chic as well as a hallmark of classic grown-up glamour (thanks to Hollywood icons Audrey Hepburn and Katherine Hepburn).
Trench coats are as essential in a capsule wardrobe as jeans, a blazer and a pair of loafers – but a short trench coat for women is a playful new take on the outerwear icon. Remember that your basics don’t have to be boring – a new season update will elevate your look to totally on-trend for spring. Of course you can wear your trench coat with a whole host of classics, but it also looks cute over a hoodie, try it with leather trousers and get creative with the way you tie your belt.
So, which are the short trench coat styles we’ve added to our wishlist? Zara’s short oversized version is ideal to sling on as a cute spring jacket and H&M’s double breasted style echoes the traditional trench silhouette. Burberry have an updated cropped trench coat that echoes their iconic original and Maxmara’s water-resistant version is a practical choice, if you have a designer-sized budget to spend.
Karen Millen’s leather trench coat in sunny yellow nods to warmer days ahead and Warehouse have a great faux leather style – both of which will add some edge to a classic outfit. Alternatively RedValentino’s trench coat on TheOutnet.com comes with sweet ruffles for a hyper-feminine variation on the trench. All of our edit would make a clever buy for seasons to come, but which is your favourite?
